Franschhoek is arguably the most historic and captivating town in the Cape Winelands and it always promises and delivers an unforgettable experience. It certainly did on my overnight visit to the wonderful La Petite Ferme.
A leading wine estate situated on the slopes of the Oliphants Pass and Middagkrans Mountain Range, La Petite Ferme overlooks the Franschhoek Valley and is the ideal destination for local and international guests. It offers unparalleled views, luxurious accommodation, and award-winning food and wine, with the accommodation comprising five beautifully appointed Vineyard Suites and five fully renovated Manor House suites – which I was there to see.
The added accommodation nicely complements the existing and popular vineyard suites and was born of months of extensive renovations that saw the four suites of the estate’s historic Manor House being completely overhauled, with a fifth suite added. The building itself was formerly known for its Cape Vernacular style in both look and feel, but following the renovations, the interiors are now more contemporary and upmarket. Verandas have been redone, the pool enlarged, and the landscape modernised, successfully bringing the allure that comes with luxury international standards to a setting characterised by its majestic mountains and vineyards.
Each suite is individually decorated in a theme from a different region of the world and has been named as a special dedication after people who have inspired the owner of La Petite Ferme. The five suites are therefore John & Carol, Foufi, Helene, Andre and Sryani. Each has its private terrace, some with built-in daybeds and dedicated sun lounges that are perfect for relaxing and enjoying the stunning view.
My stay reminded me how much I love it there, and the dramatic seasons in the day that we experienced on my stay brightened the greens of the lush vineyards and framed the mountains against the ever-changing sky above the tree-heavy valley below. Views like no other, enhanced by exceptional dining options and a renowned wine-tasting experience, made for a serene escape from the bustling city. There with a bunch of wonderful women by invitation of Theresa Gibbon, I stayed in the Africa Room, one of the Vineyard Suites.
I couldn’t resist slipping into my private plunge pool, which was almost within arm’s reach of the vineyard, and soaking up the benefits of the water despite the Summer rain.
The setting is nothing short of extraordinary, making it a haven for nature lovers and enthusiasts alike.
La Petite Ferme takes pride in its exceptional dining options, offering a culinary journey that celebrates the rich flavours of the Cape Winelands. The on-site restaurant, with its unrivalled views, sets the stage. You can indulge in lunch or dinner, both expertly crafted using locally sourced ingredients that showcase the region’s diverse and fresh produce. The culinary masterpieces leave a lasting impression and when paired with estate wines, make it all rather wonderful.
La Petite Ferme delivers an exceptional wine-tasting experience, producing estate wine from their well-tended cascading vineyards that capture the essence of the terroir. Opt to be guided through their wines and hear the stories behind each vintage and insights into the winemaking process. The wine tasting is an opportunity to savour the flavours, aromas, and complexities of Franschhoek’s wines, and will guide you to what you’d like to pair your meal with.
La Petite Ferme also offers activities such as half/full day ‘Bike Adventures’ and a Mobile Beauty Spa that brings the Spa experience directly to you. With its romantic setting, it is a really good option for weddings, special functions and events.
On our stay, we took an early morning walk from our accommodation down into the valley, exploring some of Franschhoek’s backstreets on foot and stopping for a coffee before heading back up the hill in time for breakfast. Franschhoek itself is packed with things to do and an array of high-end shopping to indulge in, and galleries to inspire the art lover. There’s the Wine Tram, the Farm Sanctuary SA and numerous attractions to stop at on the way out of town.
I absolutely love Franschhoek and always have, and the location of Le Petite Ferme with its endless views, welcoming atmosphere and exceptional food, makes it a highly recommended choice. My suggestion is that you take a 2-3 night stay minimum to enjoy both the estate and the setting. You won’t want to be there for less.
At less than three minutes from the village of Franschhoek, La Petite Ferme is an all year destination that leaves a lasting impression on those who choose to stay there.
